Troopers will be out to provide assistance, and the department will be working alongside local Emergency Operations Centers to prepare for the increased number of storm-related calls for service.
Motorists traveling in areas expected to get heavy snow should use their best judgment to determine whether driving is truly necessary. Keep the current snowfall rate and accumulation, wind and visibility in mind when making your decision.
If you do find that getting behind the wheel is an absolute necessity, take the following precautions to keep yourself safe:
- Thoroughly clear the snow and ice from your vehicle and mirrors before your drive
- Keep a full tank of gas
- Make sure your vehicle’s fluids are topped off
- Check that your spare tire is in working condition and that you have a jack and lug wrench
- Drive slowly, brake early and avoid using cruise control
- Stock your trunk with emergency essentials: gloves, a first-aid kit, non-perishable foods, water, a flashlight with batteries, a spare cell phone charger, etc. Also include auto emergency essentials like a tow chain or cable, rock salt or cat litter, a shovel, etc.
- Stay on the lookout for maintenance and emergency vehicles and give them plenty of room to work
